In 2009, MAAM returned to Saratoga Springs, having last visited the former “Queen of Spas” in 1987. The conference theme, “Invigorating Museums” was suggested by the city’s reputation in the nineteenth century as the foremost place to “take the waters,” which were thought to have a refreshing and invigorating effect. Indeed, Saratoga Springs offered a perfect environment to talk about ways to refresh and renew our museums—exploring new structures of museum leadership, promoting creativity, increasing relevancy, and inviting and engaging new audiences.
